When Angela and Terry-Jo, two avid Taylor Hicks fans, entered for a chance to win a prize package that included tickets to the May 27th concert and accommodations at the Red Lion Inn Coos Bay, little did they know what was in store for them!

Angela’s Story

Angela was randomly selected as the winner of our Taylor Hicks Concert package last month. She is a busy mom who works long hours so we were thrilled to give her a much deserved night out with her favorite American Idol.

She made the trip from Roseburg, Oregon with her friend Jan to enjoy a one night stay at The Red Lion Inn Coos Bay, dinner at the Mill Casino, tickets to the show- and as a special surprise, backstage passes! The pair watched the sound check and and describes meeting Taylor Hicks as “one of the wonderful highlights of my life”.

“We felt like school girls again, all flustered and giggly, as each one of us got a turn to greet Taylor and take a picture.” says Angela. “And then Taylor took the stage..We were awestruck! I clapped, I whistled, I yelled out Taylors Name, I cheered!! Taylor and his band were exceptional!! SOUL PATROL RULES!!! I did not want the concert to end.” Angela says Taylor was very polite and gracious as he signed T-shirts, CDs and “was such a gentleman”!

When Terry-Jo left this comment on our blog, we knew we had to do something to help her celebrate a very special anniversary: May 27th marks my 3-year “cancer-versary” (3 years to the day of the completion of chemo & radiation treatments)! I cannot think of a better celebration than a stay in beautiful Coos Bay Oregon with the beatufiful soul, Taylor Hicks! I really appreciate your consideration.

We decided to contact Terry-Jo and invited her and a guest to come down and stay at the Red Lion Inn and enjoy a meal here at The Mill Casino along with tickets to the show on us.

Terry-Jo, thrilled to receive our email, made long drive from Seattle with her best friend.  “It was the first road trip I have taken with her in over 20 years” she says.

After the long drive, the ladies managed to find  time trying out their luck in the casino before the concert (which did not disappoint this long time fan)! Afterwards, she was able to meet Taylor Hicks in person!  Here is what she had to say:

“He is one of the kindest celebrities I’ve met and makes sure you know how much he appreciates you…. He put on a stellar performance and I found myself, not surprisingly, smiling the entire time. He makes my heart happy! He engages the audience, including them in his performance and taking them on his ride. He stayed after and met the fans, signed autographs, took pictures, and visited with you while he was at it. It’s not ‘all business’ with Taylor Hicks, he seems to truly care.”

“I cannot begin to express to you how much I appreciate your kindness and generosity. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about the day I received your email saying that my story of being a 3-year cancer survivor touched you enough to offer me tickets to Taylor’s sold out show! I have to say, cancer sucks…..but, if it bought me a night with Taylor Hicks at the Mill Casino……..”

RV Tips – Keeping Your Camper Cool
Summer is here and for RVers that not only means prime travel season is upon us, but so is the heat. If you ever walked inside an RV that is sitting in the direct sunlight on a hot summer day you know what I mean. Fortunately there are some things we can do to make our summer RV camping trips more pleasurable.

• Strategically park your RV to take advantage of any shade that is available, especially on the side where the refrigerator vent is located. Don’t be afraid to ask for a shady site when you check in at the campground. This will not only help cool the RV down, but your refrigerator and roof A/C will work much more efficiently.
• You can also improve your air conditioners efficiency by keeping the A/C filters clean. In most cases you can wash the filters in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry before reinstalling. Another option is to clean the filters with a small hand held vacuum cleaner. I recommend you keep a new set on hand in the event the old filters have seen better days.
• Use your main awning and any window awnings to assist in cooling the RV down. In addition to the awnings use your window blinds or drapes to help keep the sun out and the cooler air in.
• Campground voltage can fluctuate, especially during the summer months when campers are running their A/C, placing a higher demand on campground electricity. You should monitor the voltage coming in to your RV with a digital voltmeter. If voltage drops below 105-volts or goes above 130-volts turn your appliances and electronic equipment off until proper voltage is restored.
• Install a thermostatically controlled refrigerator vent fan at the back of the refrigerator, or at the top of the roof vent, to assist with drafting the hot air away from the refrigerator. If you are mechanically inclined these fans are fairly easy to install, or you can have your RV dealer install one for you. Either way it’s worth it. The fan removes the heat built up behind the refrigerator improving the refrigerators performance by up to 40%.
• Another ingredient to keeping your RV cool is proper ventilation. Proper ventilation helps prevent excess heat from building up in your RV. You can install Maxx Air vent covers over the roof vents to allow for ventilation. They are inexpensive, easy to install and they let the fresh air in, even when it’s raining, while the stale, musty air, smoke, cooking odors and heat escapes. I use a vent cover on each end of our RV to promote cross ventilation.
• To help keep the inside of the RV cool try to avoid opening the door as much as possible and cook outside rather than inside whenever possible.
• Take a couple of small fans with you to help circulate the air. If for some reason you can’t run the A/C you’ll be glad you have them.
• If all else fails head to the campground pool and cool off.

Most people go to casinos for the “wild life,” but it is a little known secret that The Mill Casino sometimes plays host to another form of wildlife. Every so often you will see whales pass through the bay, and sometimes they will even put on a little “show” just for us.

For these three Orca (aka Killer Whales) it’s a twelve-mile swim from the Pacific to our stretch of the bay. We were fortunate to have spotted them as they said “hello” to our dinner guests at the Plank House Restaurant. You never know what you are going to encounter here at The Mill Casino! We hope all enjoyed their visit!

How do you play Craps? This is a question we hear often; in fact it is pretty common for first time casino visitors to not be familiar with the rules and basics of play of Craps.    One of the beauties of this famous casino game is that you don’t have to know everything to play and have fun. With a little bit of research and practice beforehand, you will soon be playing like a pro!

Craps is an exciting, fast-paced game and easy to learn. You want to start by learning a few basic bets and work your way up. Here are some basic things to remember:

1. Craps is played with a pair of dice; each person at the table has a chance to be the “shooter.”
2. When the Stickperson indicates it is your turn to shoot, you must bet on one of two basic bets: A Pass Line bet, or a Don’t Pass bet.
3. The Stickperson will then have you choose two of five dice. Pick them up with the hand you use for throwing (you may only touch the dice with one hand) and hit the end of the table with both dice.

What happens from here depends on the dice.

• If you throw a 7 or 11 and you are betting on the Pass Line, you “Win.”
• If you throw a Crap (2, 3, or 12), Don’t Pass bets win and Pass Line bets are taken.
• If you throw anything other than craps, 7 or 11, then that number becomes your “point” (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10)
• You must repeat the point before a 7 to win.
• Once the point has been established, you continue to shoot the dice until you make your point or 7 out.

All bets are made with gaming chips, purchased at the game. Some bets are made directly by each player (by setting your chips on specific areas marked on the table. Other bets are made by passing chips to your dealer or the stickperson. You will figure this out as you play.

Merrill is performing at Warehouse 101

Mill Casino’s hot nightspot, Warehouse 101, goes live each weekend- and we want to spotlight some of the bands that perform on our stage!

Our featured band this week is Merrill who describes their music as “high energy, emotionally charged rock n roll for the masses”. The Portland, Oregon band features Chris Merrill on Lead Vocals/Guitar; Brian Powell on Bass; Joe Gardner on Drums and Elijah Johnson on Lead Guitar/Vocals.

Merrill has performed as the opening act for such bands as Maroon 5, Counting Crows, and Augustana. They were also asked to play the 2007 Bumbershoot Music Festival with Crowded House, Fergie, and Kings Of Leon, and received regional airplay for their song “The One Thing” from their first album Evolutions. Just last month, Eli and Chris were awarded “Best Performance” at the April songwriting competition for the Portland chapter of West Coast Songwriters.

Never before, have I watched American Idol, until I saw the show while channel surfing. That day, Taylor Hicks was performing, and I only watched the show to follow his progression. Each time he worked on his presentation and evolved his ablilities. I would be so honored to be able to see him in person and hear him sing. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to express how much his voice has lent to the music world. I remember seeing Taylor Hicks for the first time on american idol, I immediately knew he was the “American Idol”, I am such a big fan of his, when I see him dance, I get so “Gitty” inside, I cannot keep still, I yell and scream, my children think I’m nutty, but they knew when I let out this crazy scream it is because Taylor is somewhere around via the radio or television. I’m fan of Taylor Hicks, and have been since his audition for American Idol. I’m a grown woman who felt like a 16yr old when I became a fan.
I’ve watched AI since season 1, and Taylor is the only one who I voted for like crazy! When he won Season 5, I was so happy and excited, I felt like I had won something. I’ve met so many wonderful people since I’ve become a fan. I’ve established some great friendships with other Taylor fans. The Mill Casino is beautiful, I would love to see it in person while attending the Taylor Hicks concert! It would be a double bonus for me to win the tickets!

I’ve loved Taylor Hicks since I saw him on American Idol. He is truly one of the most unique singers they’ve ever had on that show. Every time I hear a song on Idol that Taylor sang, I am reminded of how he did it, and how he added his own style to it.

I bought Taylor’s album when it came out after he won American Idol. My son and I listen to it endlessly. When we would sit and wait for the school bus to come in the morning we had to have the Taylor Hicks CD playing.

Now I just look forward to seeing Taylor Hicks live appearances on TV and local concerts. SOUL PATROL!!!
