The trees are trimmed, the lamps are lit, and the bidding will soon begin at the annual Festival of Trees. The Bay Area Rotary and The Mill Casino co-sponsored 13 fresh cut and three artificial tabletop trees, along with seven decorated wreaths, each with its own theme and community sponsor.

All of the decorated trees are on display in the lobby of The Mill Hotel. A family viewing reception will be held from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27 in the hotel’s second floor reception area. A cookie reception and a visit from Santa are all part of the festivities. Photos with Santa will be available through the Women’s Safety & Resource Center.

The Festival of Trees auction festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Salmon Room at The Mill Casino • Hotel. A live auctioneer joins the party at 7:00 p.m. to start the bidding.

Jolly Rotarian elves will then deliver the trees within a 30-mile radius on Dec. 2. Successful bidders can choose to donate the tree to a needy family. The Mill Casino • Hotel contributes to the purchase of the trees and wreaths so that sponsorship and auction proceeds from the Festival of Trees can go directly to local charities. In addition, local vendors are used when purchasing trees and wreaths for this Bay Area fundraiser.

While all of this year’s trees are sure to put even the biggest Scrooge into the holiday spirit, the judges have spoken. This year’s Festival of Trees decoration contest winners are as follows:

Most Original: International Port of Coos Bay

Best Use of Color: Life Care Center

Best Theme: Engles Furniture

Best Wreath: Ocean Ridge Assisted Living

Best of Show: Hough, McAdam & Wartnik, CPA

Judge’s Choice: Kitty Kitchen, Bay Area Hospital and The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park Service Ambassadors

The Spirit of The Festival of Trees and a Puppy Named Biscuit

Employee Stories, Events Comments Off

The 2011 Festival of Trees is November 22- December 1, 2011 at The Mill Casino. This annual event brings together local businesses, organizations and individuals to help families in need while demonstrating their holiday-decorating talents.

Many of you are familiar with our Festival of Trees logo (pictured on the right) but you probably don’t know the story behind it. If you look closely, you will see a series of paw prints in the sand.

Robert Jackson, Mill Casino graphic design extraordinaire, recently shared his story of this photo and I was so moved by his candor, I wanted to share it with you as well. Enjoy!

Remembering Biscuit -By Robert Jackson

The photo that we used in The Festival of Trees logo was the very first project I worked on for The Mill Casino. We’d only been in town for two days, and I took my wife Janet and our 7-month old puppy, Biscuit, out to the beach just before sunset. You can see Biscuit’s paw prints in the photo. I was so afraid he was going to jump right in the middle of the project before I got the picture taken.

We originally took Biscuit as a “foster dog,” to keep him until he was old enough to get his shots (a requirement before adoption), but we ended up being the ones who adopted him. Our experience with fostering dogs later helped us with the courage to become foster parents, where again, Biscuit (and our previous rescue, who also died this summer) became a great asset in helping kids through periods of personal turmoil. Biscuit may not have known it, but he became one of the ones doing the rescuing.

That’s what the Festival of Trees is about — reaching out to families who can use a lift. And when you help someone, sometimes it gives them the opportunity to help someone else. Even something non-essential at face value, such as a donated holiday tree, may give a family a little bright spot.

Donated trees aren’t the only way the Festival of Trees extends help to families. As an employee of The Mill, it’s important to me that we make gestures such as sponsoring the Festival of Trees, our holiday canned food drive slot tournament, and so many other good works throughout the year. Maybe, just maybe, someone who gets a lift from The Mill will be able to turn around and do something good for someone else. We’re all connected that way.

Biscuit passed a couple of months ago and I miss him. It’s warming to think that his paw prints have been a key part of this fundraiser for a ninth time. I don’t look at the Festival of Trees poster and see symbolism in Biscuit’s paw prints. He was just my happy boy, and that’s a memory of a happy day. But if he’s been part of something that helps more kids – more families – that would certainly be fitting.

When you enter the new iGaming Lounge in The Mill Casino, you step into the future of personalized casino gaming. We recently became the first and only casino in Oregon to offer casino gaming on iPad® mobile devices.

The iGaming Lounge was designed by the team at Acres 4.0 and allows guests to select from a variety of casino games that are available on the iPad® and connected to the casino through a highly secure wireless network. The wireless network allows players to take their personal gaming devices anywhere in the lounge to play with a group of friends or to simply to find a quiet spot to themselves.

Players entering the lounge are greeted by an iGaming host who will provide them with a personal gaming device as well as help them get started playing the games. Special room lighting is in place to enhance the visual impact of the games. Customized seating in the lounge is designed for guest comfort and ease of play. Food and beverage service also is available in the lounge.

The iGaming Lounge can be a great location for a party or celebration, says General Manager Larry Close. We really view this room as a whole new way for guests to enjoy the entertainment value of casino gaming. Whether they are with a group, a partner or on their own, we want to help guests at The Mill to create their own casino experience.
