There are a multitude of events happening in our region during the spring and summer months and many of you are planning your Oregon Coast getaway! As you make your travel plans for the summer season, be sure to add a visit to Shore Acres State Park on Cape Arago Highway to your travel itinerary….trust us.

Shore Acres State Park isn’t just your typical tourist destination. Known as the “jewel of the South Coast” visitors come here for the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, storm watching, whale watching, photography and to enjoy the meticulously kept gardens filled with gorgeous floral blooms. If you visit during the spring or summer months, you can expect to see:

  • 8,000 tulips – late March thru April
  • Hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas – April thru mid-May
  • 5,000 flowering annuals/perennials – May thru Sept.
  • 800 rose bushes – June thru Sept.

A bit of history: Shore Acres was once the private estate of pioneer lumberman and shipbuilder Louis J. Simpson who developed the summer home into an elaborate mansion (destroyed by fire in 1921) and featured five acres of formal gardens. In 1942, Simpson’s estate was purchased by the state of Oregon for use as a public park. Visit shoreacrespark.com for more event information.

How to Get There
Shore Acres State Park is located on the Cape Arago Highway, 13 miles southwest of Coos Bay/North Bend and U. S. Highway 101. The park is open every day from 8 a.m. to dusk. Please check posted times at park entrance for exact closing times. A nominal daily vehicle parking fee is charged. Annual day-use permits are available for purchase. Now available for either 12 or 24 month periods. Your camping receipt from Sunset Bay State Park or any other state park campground is accepted as a daily permit for those days registered. Display the receipt on the driver side of your dashboard when visiting Shore Acres State Park.

How about becoming a Certified Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) judge….kind of has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

Luckily, there is still time to register your team or be a judge in our 3rd Annual BBQ BLUES & BREWS on the BAY May 24th-25th but you must act quickly.  All entry forms and entry fees must be in by May 1, 2014!

To date, 32 teams have thrown their hat in the ring to compete for the ultimate BBQ title and the chance to win a share of more than $8,000 in Cash Prizes.  Care to join them?

Categories are: Brisket, Pork, Ribs,Chicken and Mac N’ Cheese. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must compete in the four main categories. Click on the entry form for complete details. Team Entry Fee: $250.00 per Team. Entry Form & Full Entry Fee Must Be Received By May 1, 2014


You can also register to be a certified Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) judge by clicking here. Judging will take place on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. Judges must be on property for the judges meeting at 9:30 a.m. and have completed the Kansas City Barbeque Society Certified Barbecue Judging (CBJ) Class on Friday, May 23, 2014 (see details below).
