Coquille Tribal Community Fund invites non-profits to apply early for grant program

Coquille Tribe, Press Releases Comments Off

It is never too early for area non-profit organizations to apply for grant funding through the Coquille Tribal Community Fund. Although the deadline for the current round of funding is Aug. 31, Fund officials say applying early gives organizations greater opportunity to guarantee that their applications are complete and competitive.

“When organizations submit their applications early, our Fund administrator has more time to review the applications and alert organizations to problems or missing information,” said Sheldon Chase, chairman of the Community Fund’s Board of Trustees. “We want every application to receive the full consideration that it deserves.”

The Fund provides grants to non-profit organizations and public agencies for specific projects in the areas of education, health, public safety, problem gaming, environmental issues, arts and culture and historic preservation. In last year’s funding cycle, the Tribe provided over $342,000 to 39 community and civic organizations.

Chase added that most applicants can begin their search online. Grant-seekers in the five-county area of Southwestern Oregon – Coos, Curry, Lane, Douglas and Jackson Counties – can go to www.coquilletribalfund.org to get full information on the grant program and begin the application process by using an online form for submitting a letter of inquiry. The site includes all of the criteria governing what organizations and projects qualify for grant funding and step-by-step guidance on how to apply.

Information also is available by calling the Tribal Community Fund at (541) 756-0904, or by sending an e-mail to info@coquilletribalfund.org .

The fund reflects the commitment of the Coquille Indian Tribe to take a proactive, positive role in the well-being of the community. Funds are managed and distributed by a board of trustees comprised of community leaders and representatives of the Coquille Indian Tribe.

Representatives from 39 community groups gathered with Community Fund board members and Tribal leaders at the 2013-2014 Coquille Tribal Community Fund awards luncheon earlier this year.

25th Anniversary of The Coquille Restoration Act to be Celebrated at the Mill

Coquille Tribe, Events Comments Off

June 28, 1989 marks a great turning point in Coquille Indian Tribe history.  This was the day the President signed the Coquille Restoration Act into law and restored the Tribe’s government-to-government relationship with the United States that was “terminated” 35 years earlier.  This year the Coquille Tribe celebrates the 25-year anniversary of this occasion and you are invited to join in the celebration at a very special event. Join us June 28-29, 2014 at the Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park to celebrate the history and culture of the Coquille Indian Tribe.

The Coquille Restoration Act is one of the most significant events in Tribal history because it enabled the Coquille Tribe to form a government that could create programs to provide housing, health care, education, elder care, law enforcement and judicial services to its members. Most importantly, it provided the Tribe with the tools necessary to pursue economic self-sufficiency.

With its government and business operations, the Coquille Indian Tribe is now the second largest employer in Coos County, Oregon. Along with The Mill Casino, the Tribe maintains successful business ventures in forestry, arts and exhibits, high-speed telecommunications and renewable energy.

Here are some of the special events scheduled so far for this unique celebration:

Saturday, June 28, 2014

Pow Wow: 1st Grand Entry 1:00 p.m.
Native Craft Vendors
Salmon Bake Meal $15.00 per guest

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Pow Wow: Grand Entry 12:00 p.m.
Native Craft Vendors
Ala Cart Meal Service Available

A Brief History of the Coquille Indian Tribe
The Coquille People lived and prospered along the rivers and estuaries of Oregon’s South Coast for centuries. Euro-Americans began arriving in the late 1700s bringing diseases such as smallpox, measles and plague that decimated entire villages. Then, in the 1850s, a new form of “fever” — the discovery of gold — brought an influx of settlers whose mining bespoiled the rivers and whose hostility toward the Native inhabitants of the area became increasingly violent.

A treaty was negotiated in 1855, but it was overlooked and never ratified by Congress. The Coquille People were removed to the Coast Reservation, where overcrowding and disease took their toll. The few that were able to return to their homeland kept the Coquille Tribe alive until 1954 when, through the Indian termination acts, the federal government ended its recognition 109 tribes. Coquille Tribal members worked hard to right this wrong and by 1989, federal recognition and Tribal sovereignty was successfully restored.

Other Awesome Things to Do Courtesy of Oregon’s Adventure Coast

Hang out in Charleston
The bustling marina in Charleston, OR is one of the best kept secrets on the coast!  Not only is it the heart of this community, it serves as a home port to a large commercial fishing fleet and serves charter boat operators, sports fishermen, crabbers and recreational boaters. The harbor area includes amazing seafood restaurants, tackle, and specialty gift shops. If you’d like a more authentic experience, stop by our fish markets. Go to Fisherman’s wharf on the D Docks to pick out your crab to be cooked and cleaned for you to take home or eat right there on the docks or stop by Chuck’s seafood for fresh oysters and clams.

Spend an afternoon (or two) at Shore Acres
The jewel of the South Coast, Shore Acres State Park is perched on rugged sandstone cliffs high above the ocean. Shore Acres is an unexpected combination of beautiful natural and man-made features. Once the famed estates of Louis Simpson, Shore Acres features lushly planted gardens with plans and flowers from all over the world. There’s something blooming everyday of the year.

Go Fishing, Go Crabbing, Go Clamming
Our area features a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, clamming and of course crabbing!  The best information about these fishing opportunities is available from local tackle shops. Most Pacific salmon fishing occurs April through November. Halibut is a spring and early summer fishery, while Albacore Tuna tend to be offshore from mid summer through early fall. Bottomfish are available year around – weather permitting – and a charter trip usually ends with an ice chest full of fish. Check the ODF&W website for bottomfish catch limits.

Ride the Dunes
Spring is the perfect time to hit the Dunes! The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area extends for 40 miles along the Oregon Coast and features wind-sculpted sand dunes towering up to 500 feet above sea level. The largest riding area at the Oregon Dunes stretches between Spinreel Campground and Horsfall Road. In addition to off-highway vehicle use, the  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is the perfect spot for hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping. Here is a small sample of some of actual reviews our guests have left for us recently on TripAdvisor. To see all of our reviews, please visit the The Mill Casino Hotel TripAdvisor page.  We are always listening and open to your feedback.   Thank you to all of our guests who took the time to share theirs!

After a long day of driving, our room at The Mill was a wonderful retreat! So elegant and comfortable! Front desk personnel were very friendly and nice. We’d like to see something a little different for casual eating, a little break from the casino would be nice. But we’ll stay here again and again…love the sea breeze and the comfy accommodations!

We wanted a relaxing weekend with family. We enjoyed good food, comfortable room, and pleasant views. The Easter brunch was delicious, there was a short wait, but nothing too painful. Dinner the night before was delicious in the BBQ restaurant. Service was attentive and helpful.

We come to the Mill several times a year and always look forward to it and enjoy every minute. The staff is great from the bell person to the Casino Hosts. In fact we are treated better at the Mill then anywhere else we have gone. Their smoke free lounge “White Caps” is so relaxing and again great service. You can get an appetizer or full meal and just enjoy the view. We have stayed in rooms and suites and they all have been clean and comfortable. There really is nothing about the Mill that is not good. In fact I never need to bring my own pillow since they have the greatest pillows there! If you are in the area don’t miss the Mill.

Stayed here one night, Saturday, May 17, 2014. This hotel was much, much nicer than I anticipated. The first you notice upon arrival is the friendly service at the front door and frequent “hellos” and “welcome to the Mill Casino” as you enter. The lobby is gorgeous; very clean, spacious, modern woodsy/cabin motif, tastefully decorated with exposed wood beams, big wood burning fireplace and comfy couches. Check in couldn’t have been better, total price: $105.00 + taxes. Our room given was on the second floor and overlooked Coos Bay (the water) – just gorgeous. Room itself was nice, we had two queen sized beds for my husband and I plus children. The room had a refrigerator which is always a plus and coffee maker. Beds were comfy, lodgepole headboard and overall cabin look. One slight negative: plastic shower curtain and plastic shower stall. But my criticism is minor. In the morning we had a delicious breakfast. Would definitely come back!

Thank you to our exceptional staff and our wonderful guests for making this possible!

Support the 100KCBS Meals Mission by Bringing Non-Perishable Food Items to Barbecue, Blues & Brews on the Bay!

BBQ Blues & Brews on the Bay Comments Off

Kansas City Barbeque Society to Donate 100,000 Meals

The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) is coordinating a national BBQ donation effort to cook and distribute more than 100,000 meals throughout America over the next year. BBQ, Blues & Brews on the Bay in North Bend, Oregon will be participating in the 100 KCBS Meals Mission by collecting food contributions for the hungry.

The general public is invited to attend BBQ, Blues & Brews on the Bay at The Mill Casino May 23-25, 2014 and bring non-perishable food items to donate to the 100KCBS Meals Mission. BBQ, Blues & Brews on the Bay will be working with Oregon Coast Community Action to distribute the food to those in need.

With almost 20,000 members and more than 425 sanctioned BBQ events in its network, KCBS is the largest organization of BBQ enthusiasts in the world. By using its volunteers, judges, cook teams and event organizers, the nonprofit society will be providing fully cooked, world-class pork butts and other nonperishable food items to food banks and other charitable entities coast to coast, border to border.

“By the very nature of our size and collection of food enthusiasts, we have an obvious opportunity to make a difference in America’s hunger crisis,” said Carolyn Wells, executive director of KCBS. “There are more than 7,000 teams who compete at our events, and for years, they all have demonstrated a giving, charitable mentality. We simply believed it was time to organize a major effort that is a natural extension of our overall mission.”

According to recent hunger and poverty statistics, nearly 15 percent of all U.S. households, or 49 million people, struggle to put food on their table. More than 1 in 5 children in the U.S. live below the poverty line. The 100KCBS Meals Mission aims to help in this effort and give back to the community.

By April 30, 2015, KCBS will have donated more than 3,200 pork butts — the equivalent of 25,000 pounds of cooked pork, or, 100,000 meals to this effort. Currently, there are 34 registered teams that will be preparing the donation at The Mill Casino event. In addition to cooking the provided pork butts, all teams, judges and BBQ enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in this mission by bringing non-perishable items to the BBQ, Blues & Brews event.
