If you’re ready to try something new at The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park, you won’t want to miss out on three card poker. A relatively new game, three card poker was introduced to casinos as a faster alternative to traditional poker games. This game pits you against the dealer to see who has the better hand, offering several different ways to win. It’s easy to learn and fun to play, but the rules may seem confusing if you’re not yet familiar with the game. To make sure you’re prepared to join a table during your next visit, this overview of the basics of three card poker will have you playing with confidence in no time.
How to Play
When playing three card poker, your goal is to have a better hand than the dealer using standard poker hand order. But like the name of the game implies, you and the dealer will only have three cards to accomplish this feat. This limits the possible hands you can create to:
- Straight flush
- Three of a kind
- Straight
- Flush
- Pair
- High card
The one exception to standard poker hand order is that a straight and a flush are flipped because it is more difficult to land a straight in this game.
Placing Your Bets
In order to be dealt into a game, you will have to place an ante bet first. After receiving your cards, you are given the option to fold or place a play bet, which must match the value of your ante bet. This means that if you are confident that you can win before the cards are dealt, you should increase the values of your ante bet to maximize your play bet as well.
Before your cards are dealt, you will also have the opportunity to place a PairPlus bet. The PairPlus Bet is a simple wager that wins when you are dealt a pair or better in your hand, and is independent from your play bet. If you are dealt a better hand than a pair, such as a straight flush, three of a kind, flush or straight the payout will be higher based on the table’s odds.
Winning the Game
Once your cards have been dealt and you have decided to play your hand there are a few different scenarios that will enable you to win. While you’ll need to receive a stronger hand to best the dealer, his or hand only qualifies if they hold a high card of a queen or better. This is important, because:
- If the dealer’s hand qualifies and your hand is better, you win the value of both your ante and play bet.
- If the dealer’s hand does not qualify, then you win the value of your ante bet, and your play bet is pushed.
- If the dealer’s hand qualifies and his/her hand is better, you lose both your ante and play bet.
- If the dealer’s hand qualifies and is equal to yours, both the ante and play bet are pushed.
You may also win an ante bonus payout if your hand includes a straight flush, three of a kind, or a straight as long as you have placed an ante and play bet. This is separate from all other bets and just another way to win even more!
