Sports betting area at The Mill Casino

An Introduction to Sports Betting

Any sports fan has probably heard of sports betting. It’s a great way to become part of the action on game day, but if you’re new to the idea, placing that first bet might be a confusing prospect. The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park is the first location in Southern Oregon to offer sports betting, and we consider ourselves experts in this area. Here’s our beginner’s guide to sports betting to help you get started when you visit our casino on Coos Bay, OR.

What’s the Draw?

If you’re new to the world of sports betting, you may be wondering why it’s so popular. Millions of Americans are fans of at least one sport, whether it’s baseball or football or auto racing. By betting on their favorite players or teams, those people can take part in the exciting action on game day. If their team wins, so do they, and they can walk away from victory with more than just pride.

Sports betting is also very approachable. You don’t need extensive background knowledge to have a chance of winning some money. While an understanding of the sport and statistical analysis might add to the fun, they’re not required. You can simply place a bet, watch the game, and try your luck in the company of fellow sports fans.

Please add info about in Oregon, betting on college sports cannot be done on-line, so The Mill Casino is a great option.

Types of Sports Bets

There are a few different kinds of sports bets that differentiate by how the winner is decided. Here’s a brief overview:

This is the simplest bet type. Each team is assigned odds, which are numerical representations of their chances of winning. The underdog has higher odds, with the favorite having lower odds. Your winnings are based on those odds. If you bet $100 on a team with 1.80 odds, for instance, your payout will be $180.

Before the game, teams are assigned a point spread, a predetermined margin of points that the team you’re betting on must win by. If the point spread is seven and a half, for instance, then bets on the favorite will pay out if your team wins by eight points.

A parlay bet is a single wager that includes multiple teams. For example, if you make a parlay on five different teams, you get your payout if all five teams win. However, you lose if any one of your teams loses. Luckily, the payout is proportionally huge to the risk. There are also a few subtypes, including:

  • In return for a reduced payout, teasers skew the point spread in your favor; payoff odds change with each teaser amount.
  • Round robins break the parlay into several smaller combinations that are easier to win.

Where to Bet on Sports on the Oregon Coast

Many sports betting venues are online. While this method is convenient, it lacks much excitement. Instead of participating online, search for casinos that offer sports betting, like The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park. You can place your wager, enjoy a hot meal, and watch the game alongside other fans. We have several kiosks on our casino floor, as well as Warehouse 101, a sports bar and nightclub with 18 TV screens, delicious wings, and a broad selection of local brews. The Egyptian Opening theater

A Summarized History on the Coos Bay Egyptian Theatre

Travel down Broadway in Coos Bay, and you’ll see a marquee that would fit right in on the street of the same name in New York City. This majestic light display marks the spot of the Egyptian Theatre, one of the most interesting and historical places in town. The theater has had a long and rich existence, much of which has been preserved and is celebrated to this day. Learn more about the Coos Bay Egyptian Theatre before your next trip to The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park – you’re sure to want to make a visit.

Early Beginnings

Historic photo of Coos Bay town with Egyptian sign

The Egyptian Theatre first opened its doors in November of 1925, but the building in which it is housed was constructed three years earlier as the Motor Inn Garage and Service Station. However, after building restrictions relaxed following World War I, the structure was converted into a theater. The Egyptian motif was part of a movement inspired by the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and the excavation of the Great Hall of Karnak happening around the same time. Two tall bronze statues of pharaohs on thrones greet patrons entering the lobby, where the walls are covered in hieroglyphics. The arch above the stage has a replica of an ancient Egyptian temple, with two columns on either side that are covered in depictions of lotuses, royal figures, and more ancient writing.

Soon after the Egyptian Theatre was opened, pictures with sound, then called talkies, boosted the popularity of movies. The theatre showed talkies from the country’s biggest studios during the weekend, attracting people from all over Oregon’s south coast. The theatre survived the Great Depression by holding bank nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, where they enticed visitors with cash raffles.

Change of Ownership

In 1949, the theatre was sold to Jones Enterprises, which was owned by Stan McSwain. McSwain updated the theatre with amenities such as a concession stand and a new marquee. But by the early 1970s, television and drive-in theaters created heavy competition for traditional movie theaters. McSwain tried to counteract declining attendance by adding a third screen, but the change had little effect. The theatre was sold again in 1982 and underwent a slow decline throughout the end of the twentieth century that saw ownership change hands several times. Eventually, it was closed in November of 2005, and the building was put up for sale.

Renovation Gives New Life

Fortunately, the City of Coos Bay Urban Renewal Agency quickly bought the building in 2006 and started the much-needed surveys and repairs to get the theatre back up and running again. In June of 2014, the Egyptian Theatre opened its doors once more, with structural repairs made, stage house roofing replaced, and the outside electrical system completely overhauled but most of the original interior still intact. The front façade and marquee were upgraded with a new design that pays tribute to the original look of the theatre. Today, the Egyptian Theatre serves as an important part of the Coos Bay community by holding fundraisers, events and of course, showing movies.

Hand rolling dice at a table game of craps.

Enjoying a Game of Craps

Few scenes at a casino are more exciting than the craps table. It’s common to see bystanders gathered around, cheering as the shooter hurls dice down the length of the board. Craps is one of the most fast-paced games available, and also one with a high potential for big winnings. The game’s lingo and traditions can be a little intimidating at first, but don’t let that stop you – craps games are one of the best reasons to visit casinos. If you’d like to try it out, The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park offers a quick intro to help you get started.

Craps Basics

Most craps tables are double-sided and feature the same layout on either side with a stickperson in the middle to collect the dice. There are usually no seats, and players stand to achieve a good position and see the results of their throws. Dealers stand on either side of the table, ready to exchange cash for chips and take your bets. However, some bets may only be placed at certain times – ask the dealer if you’re not sure.

To get started if you want to shoot the dice on a come out roll you will need a pass line or a Don’t Pass bet. Those that bet on the Pass line are counting on the shooter to win, while those on the Don’t Pass line bet against him or her. If the come-out roll totals seven or eleven, Pass bets win and Don’t Pass bets lose. The results of the come-out roll will determine what happens next, such as:

  • A roll of two, three or twelve is a craps roll, causing Pass bets to lose. Don’t Pass bets win on two and three, but push on a roll of twelve.
  • Any other number rolled is called the point number. Once the point number is set, Pass bets win whenever that number rolls before a seven comes up. If a seven is rolled first, the player’s turn ends and the dice pass clockwise to the next player.

Placing Bets

Rules are largely the same for the Come and Don’t Come lines, although certain bets may only be placed on rolls after the come-out. To indicate that the next turn is a come-out roll, the dealer places a disk marked “Off” in the corner of the Don’t Come box. After the come-out roll, the disk will be flipped to its “On” side and put in the box with the number that currently reflects the point.

You can also place bets in several ways other than using the Pass/Don’t Pass and Come/Don’t Come lines. Popular alternatives include:

  • Hard Ways: On these bets, you are wagering that the dice will end up with the same number on both dice, adding up to four, six, eight or ten.
  • Proposition Bets: These bets allow you to wager on certain numbers or groups of numbers. For example, a bet on craps wins if the number rolled is a two, three or twelve.

Several other betting options are available, and spending time watching craps at casinos is a great way to learn. See what other players are doing or ask one of our friendly dealers and try it out for yourself to master the game.

Be sure to stop by the craps table on your next visit to The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park. Local Tips

Woman and man smiling at each other while playinghree-card poker.

Basics of Three Card Poker

If you’re ready to try something new at The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park, you won’t want to miss out on three card poker. A relatively new game, three card poker was introduced to casinos as a faster alternative to traditional poker games. This game pits you against the dealer to see who has the better hand, offering several different ways to win. It’s easy to learn and fun to play, but the rules may seem confusing if you’re not yet familiar with the game. To make sure you’re prepared to join a table during your next visit, this overview of the basics of three card poker will have you playing with confidence in no time.

How to Play

When playing three card poker, your goal is to have a better hand than the dealer using standard poker hand order. But like the name of the game implies, you and the dealer will only have three cards to accomplish this feat. This limits the possible hands you can create to:

  • Straight flush
  • Three of a kind
  • Straight
  • Flush
  • Pair
  • High card

The one exception to standard poker hand order is that a straight and a flush are flipped because it is more difficult to land a straight in this game.

Placing Your Bets

In order to be dealt into a game, you will have to place an ante bet first. After receiving your cards, you are given the option to fold or place a play bet, which must match the value of your ante bet. This means that if you are confident that you can win before the cards are dealt, you should increase the values of your ante bet to maximize your play bet as well.

Before your cards are dealt, you will also have the opportunity to place a PairPlus bet. The PairPlus Bet is a simple wager that wins when you are dealt a pair or better in your hand, and is independent from your play bet. If you are dealt a better hand than a pair, such as a straight flush, three of a kind, flush or straight the payout will be higher based on the table’s odds.

Winning the Game

Once your cards have been dealt and you have decided to play your hand there are a few different scenarios that will enable you to win. While you’ll need to receive a stronger hand to best the dealer, his or hand only qualifies if they hold a high card of a queen or better. This is important, because:

  • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and your hand is better, you win the value of both your ante and play bet.
  • If the dealer’s hand does not qualify, then you win the value of your ante bet, and your play bet is pushed.
  • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and his/her hand is better, you lose both your ante and play bet.
  • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and is equal to yours, both the ante and play bet are pushed.

You may also win an ante bonus payout if your hand includes a straight flush, three of a kind, or a straight as long as you have placed an ante and play bet. This is separate from all other bets and just another way to win even more!

With these tips in mind, you’re ready to take on a new poker challenge. Man showing children printing equipment at the Marshall Sun Printing Museum

Highlight on the Marshfield Sun Printing Museum

Featured on the National Register of Historic Places, there is plenty of exciting history packed into the small Marshfield Sun Printing Museum in Coos Bay, Oregon. Once home to the Marshfield Sun newspaper and print shop, the space and equipment is virtually as it was left when the owner died in 1944; additional exhibits about printing and the area have been added. If you’re interested in the history of print and a glimpse of our community in the first half of the last century, it’s a can’t-miss stop during your next stay at The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park. Learn more about the Marshfield Sun Printing museum and other Coos Bay museums before planning your next trip.

History of the Marshfield Sun

When the Marshfield Sun newspaper printed its first edition in 1891, the shop was housed down the street from its final location. In 1911, the newspaper and print shop moved to 1049 Front St, where visitors can learn about their legacy today. Founder Jesse Allen Luse edited and published the paper from its origin until his death in 1944. Throughout his time running the Marshfield Sun, Luse printed each edition by hand, making him one of the last printers in the state to utilize the centuries-old handset method. Today, this spirit is honored by showcasing the tools he used to produce the newspaper for more than 50 years.

What’s on Display

Since the Marshfield Sun ceased printing in 1944 after Luse’s death, not much has changed inside the building. Exhibits were added in the upper level and on the walls, but when you step inside the front door, you’ll feel as if you’re taking a journey back in time. Given Luse’s dedication to printing the paper by hand after many had moved to automatic machinery, there are some rare pieces of equipment on display at the museum, such as:

  • Washington Hand Press: This iron printing press was a popular design in the early 20th Iron presses gained popularity because they were durable and easier to clean than the traditional wood presses at the time. They also featured a system of levers and counterweights that made pulling the lever that brought the platen onto the type require much less force to use. Designed to be taken apart, moved, and put back together, this style and make was used to print the news throughout the frontier American West.
  • Chandler & Price Job Press: Platen jobbers from Chandler & Price are extremely rare, with only 100,000 estimated to have been built. They have gained reverence among collectors today because of the quality put into crafting each press, which was rare in an era when the printing press business was competitive, and many companies were putting out cheap models.

In addition to these rare machines, visitors can find equipment like a proof press, industrial paper cutter, and a boiler-plate casting machine. There is also the whole range of hand-typesetting equipment, including dozens of trays of the metal type that the actual individual letters were printed off. All the historic equipment at the museum still works and is occasionally used by the museum’s skilled volunteers for special print jobs.

Finally, the museum contains an edition of almost every paper that Luse printed over his 53-year career as the owner/publisher of the Marshfield Sun. This excursion back into history is assisted by the helpful museum volunteers, who conduct tours and can provide interesting facts about the printing press industry and this living piece of local history.
