Your Guide to Exploring Coos Bay by the Season

Where the Coos River meets Coos Bay, you’ll find the cities North Bend, OR and  Coos Bay, OR. Home of The Mill Casino • Hotel & RV Park, these coastal towns offer a wide array of activities all year round, so whether you’re an avid fisherman, hiker, kayaker or outdoor enthusiast, you’re sure to find something to do. To get started, check out these suggestions.

When the skies are clear and the air warms, it’s the perfect time to visit Coos Bay, OR. Summertime in Coos Bay is marked by comfortable temperatures – the daily high temperature is above 64-degrees Fahrenheit from late June to early October. Take in stunning ocean views with a walk along the Coos Bay Boardwalk, or embark on a sea kayaking tour for a scenic paddle to observe wildlife.

Simpson Beach, located at Shore Acres State Park, is a popular spot for picnics. It’s also a great place to watch for seals, sea lions, whales and more. During the summer months, make sure to pay a visit to the Coos Bay Farmers Market to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables and handmade items from local farmers and businesses.

As the weather turns cooler, surfing in Coos Bay heats up. Hang ten at Bastendorff Beach County Park – the waves will only get bigger as the season presses on. If you’re looking forward to a fishing adventure, you’ll be happy to know that recreational Dungeness crabbing season is year-round with the best crabbing starting in November. Grab your bait and traps, and get going. This time of year, you can also witness the changing fall colors. Consider taking a car ride along Oregon Route 38 or US-101. It’s a trip you won’t want to miss.

Cooler and much more dramatic, winter in Coos Bay, OR offers a number of opportunities for visitors to get out and explore. Hire a fishing guide or rent a kayak, and catch some steelhead trout. Wintertime is also ideal for crabbing. If you’d prefer to stay on shore, visit Shore Acres State Park to watch 100-foot waves crash against the cliffs. Stay at the park past dark from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, and you’ll be able to witness the spectacular light display that is Holiday Lights at Shore Acres.

There’s a lot to do in Coos Bay during the springtime. Salmon, surf perch and bass await avid fishermen, while kayaks and canoes call explorers at South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve just a short drive from Coos Bay. Go for a hike at Cape Arago State Park or Sunset Bay State Park, or visit Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area to see scenic canyons and plunging waterfalls. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent an ATV and head out to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Plan a Visit to the Coos History Museum

Whether you’re staying at The Mill Casino Hotel or The Mill RV Park, a trip to Coos Bay wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Coos History Museum. Beginning operation over 70 years ago, the museum helps piece together the history of the region with interactive displays and educational programs.

About the Museum

Operated by the Coos County Historical Society – a not-for-profit organization founded in 1891 – the Coos History Museum first opened in 1947. Their mission from the very beginning was to collect and preserve artifacts, such as tools, clothing, photographs and documents that tell the story of Coos County, as well as Oregon’s South Coast.

While the museum once occupied a one-story building in Coquille, in 1958 it moved to Simpson Park in North Bend, Oregon. The current museum opened in Coos Bay in the fall of 2015. With two floors of exhibits, the museum aims to give visitors a better understanding of life in the South Coast, from generations past to present.

What to Expect

Visit today, and you’ll see an ever-expanding collection of historic artifacts and archival materials that explore the area’s geography, history and economics. The museum also houses a large collection of Native American artifacts, including baskets and tools made locally by tribes in the Coos and Coquille watersheds. Since the 1980s, the Coos County Historical Society has worked in tandem with the Coquille Indian Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians of Oregon to provide visitors with an accurate representation of their cultural history.

Check out their current exhibits for more information.
